Mary-Ann Baldwin, Raleigh City Councilor-at- large, spoke about the Top Three Things We Need to Accomplish During 2009 To Be a Successful City.  They are:

1. Comprehensive Growth Plan with an emphasis on higher density (not just taller buildings).  Urban sprawl as we have known it is not sustainable in a city that is expected to double in population in the next twenty years.

2. Transit with an initiative to obtain enabling legislation for 1/2 cent sales tax. Other cities have demonstrated that an effective transit plan to include circulator buses and light rail are major land use drivers.

3. Public Safely with a priority on gang prevention with such initiatives as out-come based, after-school programs for at risk middle schools students and mentoring programs.
