Where Business Owners, Entrepreneurs and Professionals Connect for Information and Inspiration
Joseph K. Durham, Deputy Wake County Manager, 4/22/2009
Joe Durham, David Cooke's Deputy Manager and a faithful pinch-hitter, gave a informative and positive message about how Wake County is addressing the current challenges caused by the down ecomony. The positives include a long list of #1, #2 and #3 rankings of Raleigh/Wake County for Best Place to Live, for Business and Careers, Top Business Climate. etc. Is there any wonder almost 100 people a day move here? That places stress on city/county resources which depend upon tax revenues to support the infrastructure and schools. Yes, Joe pointed out that Wake County is responsible for building the schools required by all those kids (over 7,000 increase in 2007 over the prior year) and consumes 50% of the general fund. Property and Sales taxes combined amount to 77% of the general fund revenues which are off from prior periods. Wake County is feeling the effects of the recession. However, Joe pointed out that because of the long range approach to planning and budgeting, Wake County will weather the storm better than other areas.
Those who attended Joe's sessions (and others who have something to say are invited to add their comments to my blog.
